Are markets the heart of a community?

With every social interaction, noise getting louder, the different smells overpowering at times but adding to the experience, and the infinite color palettes bringing the energy one notch higher.  I cannot remember a time where this feeling of wellbeing and livelihood has embraced me at any supermarket.

Are we lacking so much social collaboration and interactions that we forget a vital part of a healthy community are independent vendors and local farmers and businesses?
